Curiously, I heard a related quote today: People will choose safety over freedom.

While I agree that not everyone wants that, I disagree with Chesky. The best and most ambitious people want autonomy and need autonomy to thrive.

I agree that it’s more about alignment. Managers can give autonomy while asking questions to align objectives. During the planning phase, give clear goals and ask questions like:

- Does the design solve the problem?

- Is it maintainable?

Managers’ job is to ensure that the developers are able to answer these questions clearly and the business expectations are met.

Once that’s ensured, the developers should enjoy having the autonomy during execution, as long as they follow the plan and schedule.

Agreed Adler!! I would also add that they should enjoy autonomy with the knowledge and safety that the EM can step in at any moment they need them to.
